Mumbai Airport Or Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport Mumbai

About Mumbai Airport:

Mumbai, the nation’s Financial Hub, is visited by scores of people throughout the year. Mumbai has two Airports-The Chattrapathi Shivaji International Airport and Santa Cruz Domestic Airport. At a height of 26 feet above mean sea level, The Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport serves as one of India’s major international airports. It is also the busiest, currently handleing up to 45 landings and takeoffs per hour. The Island city has its own airport, called Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA), to keep its visitors at convenience. Ranging from car parking to hiring, public conveniences to ATMs, communications to duty-free shops, luggage services to medical facilities, every single facility can be availed at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport. Located to the north of the west coast Indian city of Mumbai (Bombay), around 32 km / 20 miles north of the city centre, Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (BOM) is India’s busiest, serving about 20 million passengers per year. Each day, the airport averages over 400 flights, serving some 55,000 passengers. Being an ISO 9001: 2000 certified airport, CSIA has all the features of an intercontinental airport. Indeed, it is the busiest airport of the country, which receives most of the international traffic to India. Stretched over an area of 1450 acres, CSIA is the leading international and domestic aviation hub of India.Mumbai Airport is particularly near Vile Parle, Kalina, Vidyanagari, Narayan Nagar and Chimatpada, and consists of an international terminal (Chhatrapati Shivaji) and a domestic terminal (Santa Cruz), which are separate entities and linked by shuttle bus. Both terminals provide access to the rest of India and many cities around the world. Both Indian Airlines and Air India provide the greatest number of services. Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport was earlier known as Sahar International Airport and Santacruz Domestic Airport, seeing that its terminals are sited in the bounds of Santacruz and Sahar. It has two international terminals – 2A and 2C and two domestic terminals – 1A and 1B. Mumbai is a charismatic city and located on an island in western India. The city of Mumbai is the capital of the state of Maharashtra and India’s most densely populated city. Also known for its thriving Bollywood film industry and enormous natural harbour, Mumbai is an important port city with a major shipping trade. From the international terminals, no less than 46 airlines operate around the world, while the domestic terminals cater to the domestic flights of Indian Airlines and various private airlines.International Travellers: On arrival at the Chattrapathi Shivaji Airport (35 kms from city centre), the immigration, baggage retrieval and customs areas precede the remainder of the services. Exchange can be obtained at bank counters just outside the customs area. Hotel bookings and pre-paid taxis are available. The authorities have left no stones unturned to ensure a comfortable journey to the passengers. For connecting passengers, Airport Authorities of India (AAI) has provided shuttle services between the domestic and international terminals.Aviation in the Mumbai region dates back as far as 1932, when mail planes used the Juhu air strip, less than 3 miles / 2 km from the actual site of the city’s airport today. In 1940, Mumbai decided to find an alternative site and a spot was chosen at Santa Cruz and Chhatrapati Shivaji Airport was born. Used by the military during the war years, Mumbai Airport was managed by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation from 1946 onwards and in 1958, a new terminal was opened. Approximating any other global airport, Mumbai (erstwhile Bombay) Airport is stippled with all the top-notch amenities and features.Any queries regarding Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport or Mumbai International Airport are entertained on phone, only when you dial 022 66852200 or 66852011. Receptionists would be attending this phone, all round the clock. Best Time To Visit Mumbai

When To Travel Mumbai:

While planning a trip to Mumbai avoid the monsoon months of June through September, when Mumbai becomes one big, overflowing pothole. Mumbai is counted amongst the most-visited tourist destinations of India. The city of full of tourist attractions, which comprise of magnificent monuments like Gateway of India on one hand and fun-filled amusement parks like Essel World on the other. It is best to avoid the monsoon months that start from June to September while planning a trip to Mumbai. During this time Mumbai becomes a big overflowing pothole. Generally the best time when to go to Mumbai is between October to April. During this time the air remains very pleasant and the relative humidity in the air becomes low. In the months of August and September Mumbai celebrates its biggest festival the Ganesh Chaturthi. Mumbai has three main seasons — Summer, Monsoon, and Winter (milder summer). The best time to visit is during the winter between November and February. Summer is from March to May with highs in the low to mid 30s. It is hot and humid during this time. June to September is the monsoon season when the city is lashed by heavy rain. The city gets flooded two or three times and normal life gets disrupted during this season. Climate is humid pretty much throughout the year, because it is on the coast. However, if you could dare to face a bit of humid then plan your visit in late August or early September when Ganesha Chaturthi, the ten-day mega fest celebrating lord Ganesha is held with vibrant camaraderie and religious fervor. It is the time when Mumbai is decked in all colors and electric with enthusiasm. This festival is celebrated to honor the Elephant headed God called Ganesha who is a very revered and benign god in the Hindu mythology. The event is worth watching as huge processions carrying massive idols of the divine figures are carried to the sea beaches where they are submerged. The event is a spectacle of true Indian culture that no one should miss. One thing is for sure, not a single person visiting it will come back feeling bored and jaded. The only thing that tourists need to be concerned about is when they visit Bombay.Bombay has an essentially a humid climate due to its proximity to the Arabian Sea. This is the time when you are in grips of never drying sweats that can make your life horrible. However, the period between October and February is the ideal time when you could visit Mumbai without falling hostage to the climatic crisis posed by humidity. During these months Bombay enjoys the refreshing gales of cold breeze and clear and azure sky warmly greeting your arrival. Monsoon season gives an amusing breathing space, but excessive rains spoil the mood of a holiday. Frankly, one should not plan a tour to Bombay during the rainy season. Due to its propinquity with the sea, the Bollywood City virtually floats in the heavy showers. The cultural festival of Ganesh Chaturthi, held in August/ September, attracts people from various parts of the country as well as the world. This is so because, if visited at the right time, the city is full of fun and frolic.Mumbai/Bombay is a city offering mega entertainment scopes for tourists. However one should know when to visit Mumbai so that the city’s weather may not play a spoilsport to your tourism binge. Plan your trip between October and April when the air is pleasant and there is relatively less humidity. The best time to visit Mumbai is during the winter from November to March since the weather is at its most pleasant during this season. If you can manage to visit Mumbai in August/September you could participate in the celebrations during Ganesh Chaturthi, which is one of the biggest festivals in Mumbai.

Mumbai Location is in the Deccan region of India and it is the capital city of the state of Maharashtra. Mumbai location is perfectly set in the western coast of India, by the bank of the Arabian Sea. Mumbai can be called as an island city as it is made from the cluster of seven islands and its name is derived from Mumbadevi (the goddess of the koli fisher folk). Moreover, there are three small rivers within the periphery of the Island City. Numerous creeks and bays are strewn on its coastline. On the eastern coast of Salsette Island, the area is cloaked with large mangroves, while the western coast is generally sandy and stony. In Mumbai, the soil cover is largely sandy because of its propinquity to the sea. Geography states that the underlying rock of the expanse is made of Black Deccan Basalt flows and their acid and basic variants.Mumbai or Bombay is the commercial center of India, a major metropolitan city that is situated on the western coast of India along the banks of the surging Arabian Sea. Located on the Salsette Island, Mumbai is mostly as Sea level with average elevation ranging from 10 to 15 meters. The Island City consists of two distinct regions – the city and the suburbs. Mumbai city consists of two different regions namely the city and the suburbs. Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra, is sited on the western coast of India. Its geographical location accedes to have the surging Arabian Sea as its background. The terrain of the city came into existence with the merger of seven islands namely, Isle of Bombay, Mazagaon, Colaba, Old Woman’s Island, Parel, Worli, and Salsette Island. Mumbai lies just above sea level, with its meager altitude ranging from 10 to 15 metres. Mumbai – the ‘Island City’ of India is located along the Ulhas river in the western coast of ‘Konkan’ region of India which is just south of the Tropic of Cancer. It sits on Salsette Island, partially shared with the Thane district.Mumbai is surrounded by the Arabian Sea to the west The geographical location of the city provides ample opportunities for trading and business. The city is situated between 18° 96′ north latitude and 72° 81′ east longitude. The average elevation ranges from 10 metres to 15 metres. The major portion of the city is at the sea level while the maximum height of the city is at 450 metres. It covers a total area of 603.4 km2 which is an aggregation of seven islands joined together by means of century long reclamation. The Island City is divided into two different regions, one the city itself and the other, its suburbs. In the coastal region called Konkan, Mumbai (or Bombay) is to be found at the mouth of Ulhas River. The mountains dominate the northern part of the city, where the highest point elevates to 450 metres in Sanjay Gandhi National Park. Sprawled in the total area of 603 km², the Bollywood city is dotted with lakes like Powai, Tulsi and Vihar Lake. Mumbai has been the economic heart of India for centuries. It has a wide bay between the city and the mainland, facing Africa and East Asia that opens the path for free trading and commerce.

Public Transport In Mumbai

About Local Transport In Mumbai:

Due to the good network system of transportation in Mumbai, traveling is quite easier in this pulsating metropolis. To travel in Mumbai, the public transport system is the best option.Mumbai is the most happening city of India, where every moment is marked by one or the other event. Bearing in mind that Mumbai lacks space for horizontal expansion, skyscrapers and flat housing systems are defining the infrastructure of this bustling city.Mumbai has an efficient network of local transportation carrying you all across the city. You can opt to be a part of the chaos of the locals or just choose the window seat on the Double Decker bus run by the BEST and see the Mumbai life in all its color. Or when in hurry hire a taxi, but be ready to get stuck in the traffic when you desperately willing to reach some place. Mumbai never leaves you bored; even the chaos makes a sense here if you are a sport. Mumbaikars prefer using local means of transport to travel around the metropolis, as insufficient parking places and traffic bottlenecks don’t allow them to draw out their own vehicles.

Public Bus Service (BEST):

Buses are the most popular means of transport in Mumbai. A major chunk of the population travels by bus. Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) buses provide efficient services in and around the city. There are buses connecting Mumbai to the suburban areas like Navi Mumbai, Thane and Mira-Bhayanadar.This system is run by a government organization “Bombay Electric Supply & Transport”. It has a fleet of red single and double-decker buses. There are newly introduced airconditioned buses as well.Public buses run by the BEST (an autonomous body under the BMC) cover almost all parts of the metropolis as well as parts of New Bombay and Thane. Buses are used for short to medium distance commuting as train fares are more economical for long distances. The BEST fleet consists of single-decker, double-decker, air-conditioned and vestibule buses. The BEST also operates ferries across creeks in northern Mumbai. The buses are numbered according to the route they run on and are usually very crowded. The tickets are given by a uniformed conductor. The buses operate till midnight and have seats reserved for senior citizens, ladies and handicapped.

Suburban Electric Trains: Local Railway Lines

The Mumbai Suburban Railway is the oldest in Asia, it was founded in 1847. These suburban trains are popularly known as Locals and they run from 4 AM till 1 AM. Mumbai suburban services have various such designations (not all of them official, but in wide use). A ‘fast’ train or ‘fast local’ is essentially one that is fast (runs express, skipping stops) until a certain station, and from that station onwards runs like a local, e.g., the Virar Fast runs express to Borivli, and then from there on is a local. The Karjat Fast is an express until Kalyan. It is owned by Indian Railways and is operated by Western Railways and Central Railways. With a length of 303 km, it claims to have the highest passenger density in the world, 6.1 million people daily. It has three lines: the Western Line, the Central Line, and the Harbour Line.

Public Taxi/Autorickshaw Services:

Auto rickshaw is yet another one of the comfortable means to travel in the city. Cars are also provided to the tourists by the Travel Agents and Hotels. These are private cars available with a private chauffeur for the convenience of the travelers. Though they are expensive, they are the safe, trusted and comfortable way of traveling around the city. Hiring a taxi is a convenient way of traveling in and around Mumbai. They are small sized cars which are cheap and easily available. The regular taxis are black and yellow in color, with manual meters and without air condition. There are even pre-paid taxis available, which rule out the meter and fix the fare before hand. From midnight, till 5 a.m. in the morning, 25 percent extra fare is charged. Big sized luggage items are charged at Rs 10 each. Before getting into a taxi, ensure that the meter is working properly. These are not available in the downtown areas and operate only beyond Bandra and Sion in the western and central suburbs, respectively. Autos also carry meters and the initial marking is 10.00. Ensure the reading is right as soon as you board an auto. It should be preferred only for short distances, as its speed is very slow.
